UWG Next Strategic Planning Process Update - June 2026
The process for building the UWG Next strategic plan officially began on June 10 with the initial meeting of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. During this session, committee members received their charge from Dr. Michael Johnson, UWG's president, and began initial discussions to guide the university's strategic planning process.
"Our responsibility is not simply to predict the future, but to shape it," Johnson said. "This process challenges us to think boldly about what is possible for UWG and to make thoughtful decisions that position the university and the communities we serve for continued success."
As shared in the university's announcement of UWG Next, the planning process is designed to be collaborative, transparent, and built through listening, bringing together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners to help shape UWG's future direction.
The committee reviewed the approach to planning, including how UWG will gather input, identify priorities, and develop a strategic plan that reflects the needs of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader community.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in this process, which gives our entire community – students, faculty, staff, and the community at large – a chance to collectively imagine UWG's future," said Dr. Sal Peralta, professor of political science and a member of the steering committee. "From my perspective, the process is off to a strong start, with a clear commitment to openness and broad input, and I encourage faculty especially to lend their voices as we imagine what UWG could be in the future."
"As a community partner, it's an honor to be part of this process," said Rhyne Owenby, president of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the steering committee. "Having a seat at the table ensures the perspectives of regional employers and community and business leaders are included, helping strengthen both the university and the economic vitality of the communities it serves."
As part of this work, an online form is now available for members of the UWG community to share ideas, perspectives, and priorities to help inform the plan.
Additional opportunities for engagement are being prepared, including a series of listening sessions that are slated to begin in the coming weeks. These sessions will provide space for open conversation and feedback as UWG works to shape its future direction.
Updates will continue to be shared on this website as the planning process moves forward.
