ILC at UWG is the place to be!
International Languages and Cultures prepares students to thrive in an increasingly multicultural and globally-connected world. We offer degrees and minors in French, German, and Spanish. We also contribute to interdisciplinary programs in Film Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies.
What We Have to Offer
ILC provides our students with a wealth of cultural opportunities. Study abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica, Vienna, Austria, and Tours/the Loire Valley in France. Participate in our campus events such as film festivals, campus cultural celebrations, and undergraduate research. Interact with caring faculty who are passionate about languages and their areas of study. Students who study languages and cultures become more engaged global citizens!

Dr. Jeff Zamostny was recently named as the new director of the University of West Georgia’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), assuming his new responsibilities in January.

Hispanic Heritage: UWG Alumni Introduce Scholarship for Spanish Majors with Academic Excellence
When Honey Shackelford ’76 arrived in the United States as a child, she spoke fluent Spanish but couldn’t speak a word of English. By the time she graduated from UWG, she spoke both languages fluently and had a bachelor’s degree in Spanish.

A University of West Georgia alumna with a master’s degree in Spanish language teacher education, Schelp is a Spanish teacher at Carrollton Junior High School (CJHS). She was recently nominated for the LifeChanger of the Year Award as a result of her notable influence on students in the classroom.

With more than 4 million words translated, Amanda N. Williams is a connection between international businesses. Williams, a 2004 graduate of the University of West Georgia, is an entrepreneurial linguist and the founder and CEO of Mirror Image Translations LLC.

Krystallyn Keith just wants to save the world. Keith, a UWG Honors College graduate, served as a cryptologic linguist in the Marines, translating between English and Pashto, one of the two official languages of Afghanistan.

Students majoring in Languages and Literatures go on to pursue careers in a wide variety of fields, including but not limited to the following: government, education (K-12 or university instructor), international business, translation and interpretation, non-profit or aid organizations, social work, law, travel and hospitality, higher education, and research in fields such as anthropology.
