When referring a student to the University Writing Center, it is important to indicate what parts of the assignment are in need of improvement, because the student is required to have a question or an area of concern that will direct the focus of the tutorial.
The Writing Center is meant to be an extension of the classroom, so the tutors will not evaluate or proofread a student's work. The point of tutorials is to teach students how to identify their problem areas and give them the tools to independently fix their errors.
The Writing Center Referral Form (pdf) can be used by professors to formally refer students to the Writing Center. The center also provides proof of a students visit with a verification slip, which can be requested at the front desk. The verification slip will contain the name of the tutor the student met with as well as a summary of what was discussed during the tutorial.
