This page provides information about COSM FRG (Faculty Research Grants) awards and application procedures. The purpose of the Faculty Research Grant (FRG) program is to assist faculty in pursuing scholarly endeavors. The goal is to provide small amount of funds to support the development of new research ideas, to cover small costs that do not necessitate a significant external grant, and to assist in gathering preliminary data.

    College of Science and Mathematics

    Awards will be for a maximum of $2000.00 for AY 2018-19. Funds may be used for supplies, travel, publishing and printing, student assistants or graduate assistants. Please note that graduate students who already have assistantships in Fall and Spring must be employed and paid during the summer only (spending deadlines will be extended for graduate assistantships). Funds should only be used as budgeted; changes for equivalent purposes are appropriate pending Associate Dean’s approval.

    Eligibility: All full-time tenured/tenure-track COSM faculty members are eligible.

    Award period: These awards are made from FY19 budget (07/01/2018 – 06/30/2019). Funds for supplies and travel must be spent by April 1, 2019.  

    Criteria: The criteria used to determine the awarding of COSM FRG awards will include: the potential for the project to support the scholarly activities of the faculty member, the outcomes of previous FRG awards, the impact on our students, and the likelihood of the project to lead to the submission of a peer-reviewed publication or an external proposal. Please refer to the COSM FRG rubric as a guide for preparing your proposal. This program does not cover proposals for the sole purpose of presentation and professional development workshops or conferences.

    Application materials:
    • Cover sheet ( please see below)
    • Project proposal not exceeding three pages addressing:

                        a. specific objectives
                        b. an overview of the research project and experimental design for an interdisciplinary reviewer group
                        c. significance of the project
                        d. anticipated outcomes (e.g., article submissions, research presentation, external proposal development, etc.)
                        e. how this award enhances the applicant’s professional activities

    • Detailed, itemized budget not exceeding one page. Budget should include justification for expenses.
    • A summary report on the status of and any outcome from the most recent FRG projects supported, not exceeding one page.
    • Curriculum vitae not exceeding three pages
