Data Collection and Reporting
A key aspect of campus sustainability is to benchmark and track our efforts in order to see what we are doing well and what we can do better. In order to do this UWG has become a member of AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, and will use AASHE’s assessment tool, STARS, beginning in 2015. STARS is the same tool used by Princeton Review in creating its list of “Green Colleges”. The STARS assessment tool awards points for a wide range of activities from operations to curriculum. You can find out more here.
The University of West Georgia’s Strategic Plan has made improved performance in the STARS system a key performance indicator for its goal of becoming a regional leader in sustainability. UWG therefore plans to continue yearly submissions to AASHE, with the hope of improving our sustainability certification. The results of the STARS submission will be made public on this page.
In addition to its work with STARS, the Center for Sustainability at UWG also maintains a greenhouse gas calculator. Such a calculator wins points in the STARS system but is also a requirement if the University decided to join the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Maintaining such a calculator is helpful in determining where the biggest contribution to greenhouse gas emissions comes from and hence how best to mitigate such releases. The Center is working on creating an easy to follow presentation of the results, which will be posted on this page.
