Debate Team
Welcome to UWG's Debate Team
Since 1935, when members of the debate team traveled to Albany to represent the institution in interscholastic competition, UWG has achieved more national acclaim in intercollegiate debate than any public university in the state.
From 1970, when Dr. Chester Gibson became the debate coach and built West Georgia into a national debate power, through the national championships won in the 21st century under Dr. Michael Hester, West Georgia Debate has sustained success as one of the elite debate programs in the nation. Our website focuses on celebrating this rich history as well as keeping alumni and supporters of UWG Debate up to date with the current squad preparation and results.
UWG Debate, in collaboration with Georgia Forensics Coaches Association (GFCA), is proud to sponsor the Team Georgia World Schools Debate team. World Schools Debate is a dynamic form of debate combining the concepts of “prepared” topics with “impromptu” topics, that encourages debaters to focus on specified issues and persuasive presentational strategies. This highly interactive style of debate allows debaters to engage each other with quality rebuttal and refutation skills. This challenging format requires good teamwork and in-depth quality argumentation. Team Georgia will compete against teams from other states and international teams.
The team will be selected from high school applicants throughout Georgia. No prior debate experience is required to apply! Please fill out the following application by September 8, 2025.
