Victim Services Certificate

Becoming an Advocate.
The victim services certificate introduces students to methods of responding to victimization in a trauma-informed and culturally competent manner. This certificate prepares students for careers in victim advocacy, but would also be useful for anyone going into a profession where they will interact with victims, such as law enforcement or nursing.

Objectives:
- Analyze causes of victimization, victims’ rights, and services available to victims.
- Examine the legal and social experiences of different populations of victims.
- Examine best practices for interacting with victims of various crimes or circumstances.
Certificate Requirements
Required Coursework: 15 credit hours
- CRIM 1100: Introduction to Criminal Justice
- CRIM 3333: Victimology
- CRIM/POLS 4006: Victim Advocacy
- CRIM/POLS 4005: Identity, Victimization, Law & Society
- CRIM 4286/POLS 4186/SOCI 4386: Internship/Practicum. Must be approved by the certificate coordinator
Elective Coursework: 3 Credits (select one course)
- CRIM 4232: Family Violence
- CRIM 4296/SOCI 4915: Violence Against Women
- CRIM 4334: Human Trafficking
- POLS 4217: Grant Writing
- POLS 4517: Human Rights
- CRIM/POLS 4002: Case Management
