  • APPA Award for Excellence
    APPA Award for Excellence

APPA was founded in Chicago in 1914 by representatives from fourteen Midwest institutions. Over the past 35 years, membership has grown - from 100 in 1970 to the current membership levels which exceeds 5,200 individuals in over 1,500 learning institutions throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad.

Organized originally as the Association of Superintendents of Buildings and Grounds, the association later became the Association of Physical Plant Administrators of Universities and Colleges. In 1991, the name APPA: The Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers was adopted to reflect increased higher education-based campus responsibilities. In 2005, the association began to identify itself simply as APPA, to pay homage to its long history, but to be inclusive of all types of educational institutions.

The APPA Award for Excellence was developed to help recognize and advance excellence in the field of educational facilities. Originally established in 1988, the Award for Excellence is APPAs highest institutional honor and provides educational institutions the opportunity for national and international recognition for their outstanding achievements in facilities management. The award is designed to highlight the essential role of facilities operations in the overall institutional mission and vision. Award for Excellence nominations are evaluated using the same criteria applied through the Facilities Management Evaluation Program (FMEP) in the areas of: leadership; strategic and operational planning; customer focus; information and analysis; development and management of human resources; process management; and, performance results. Selected institutions are visited by an evaluation team. The Award for Excellence designation is valid for a period of five years.

Campus Planning and Facilities (CP&F) first applied for this assessment in 2007. After evaluating the recommendations from the APPA assessment team, CP&F reapplied for this award in January 2009, qualified for a site visit in late April, and was presented with the award in Vancouver, B.C. in July.
