The Emerging Leaders Program is a first-year program that engages student leaders in learning the foundations of leadership development.

Program Overview

The Emerging Leaders Program is an experience that engages first-year students through learning the foundations of leadership development, developing new friendships, and making lasting connections across campus. This program is designed to cultivate leaders to make an impact at UWG and LEAD WEST! The program has two components and all incoming first-year students are encouraged to apply.

Emerge West Leadership Award

These awards are given to freshmen who have exhibited outstanding leadership skills in high school, show promise in the further development of leadership skills at UWG, and express a desire to Lead West. Recipients of the Emerge West Leadership Award must commit to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program.  Emerge West Leadership Awards are in the amount of $1000. Applications for this monetary award close the last week of January each year, however, incoming first-year students are still eligible and encouraged to apply for the Emerging Leaders Program in the fall.

Students who are interested in the Emerge West Leadership Awards apply through the general UWG Scholarship Application once accepted to UWG. Those who meet the minimum criteria are invited to attend Scholarship Day in February, and are selected in March of each year for the following academic year. The 15 students who receive this leadership award are required to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program.

Emerging Leaders Program

This program is designed to give first-year students an instant connection to campus life here at West Georgia. Emerging Leaders commit to responsible leadership on-campus and in the community and develop skills to be successful leaders in their academic, co-curricular, and social lives. Through the required activities, students connect to campus and learn basic and some intermediate leadership skills that can be used both on-campus and off. Workshops and topics that will be presented include:

  • Leadership Styles (personality assessments)
  • Etiquette and Professionalism
  • Career Development
  • Team Building
  • Communication Styles
  • Multicultural Leadership Development

Past ELP participants have become leaders on campus in roles ranging from Orientation Leaders to the presidents of various student organizations, including Student Government Association.

Students interested in participating in the Emerging Leaders Program will be able to apply through OrgSync after the first week of classes in the Fall semester. Spaces are limited for the Emerging Leaders Program.

Incoming first-year students who are committed to getting involved on campus and developing their leadership skills are eligible to apply to be in the 2018-2019 Emerging Leaders Program.
