Greek Life Glossary
The glossary below contains various terms that are used regularly by members of fraternities and sororities.
Active: A member who has been initiated into a lifelong fraternity or sorority membership and participates in chapter activities at the collegiate level
Alumni(ae): An initiated fraternity or sorority member who has graduated from college or withdrawn from the campus
Badge: The pin of an initiated member or new member
Bid: A formal invitation to membership in a fraternity or sorority
Call or Chant: An audible sound used by members to acknowledge or gain the attention of other members. Calls may vary regionally within organizations and some organizations may use more than one call
Chapter: The local collegiate group of a national fraternity or sorority
Continuous Open Bidding (COB): The period outside of Panhellenic formal recruitment when sorority with membership may extend bids
Collegian/Collegiate Member: A formally initiated member of a fraternity or sorority
College Panhellenic Council (CPC): The governing body of the Panhellenic sororities at UWG
Crossed: The same as being initiated. The term means different things to different groups, but generally means crossing over from being a pledge to being a full member. Most groups record this time to the second. Term also refers to crossing the "burning sands"
Formal Recruitment: A period of structured membership selection
Fraternity: A name applying to all Greek Letter organizations by ritual, pin, and st
Interfraternity Council (IFC): One of three governing body of fraternities at UWG. This governing body governs those fraternities that have a membership with the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).
Informational Meeting: A meeting to gain insight about an organization
Intake: A discreet process that an individual goes through to become a recognized member of a NPHC
or MGC organization
Initiation: A formal ceremony that brings about the transition from new members to initiated members
Legacy: A brother or sister, son or daughter, niece or nephew, grandson or granddaughter of a sorority member
Line: NPHC/MGC term somewhat equal to a new member class
National: A term referring to the central organization of a given fraternity or sorority.
North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC): A national organization composed of 66 national member men’s fraternities and alumni associations.
National Panhellenic Conference (NPC): A national organization composed of 26 member sororities, each of which is autonomous as a social. Greek-letter society of women.
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC): A national organization composed of four sororities and five fraternities whose membership is historically African-American, and locally the governing council for six organizations.
New Member: A member of a fraternity or sorority who has not been initiated.
New Member Program: New Members learn the history, ideals and values of fraternity and sorority life. The time frame of the New Member Program varies for each chapter.
Philanthropy: A charity undertaken by fraternity or sorority chapters on a campus, community, or national level.
Pin/Badge: The active pin is worn on the chest designating an initiated member of a certain chapter. A new member pin is similar and is used to designate a new member of a chapter.
Potential New Member (PNM): A person interested in being a member of a fraternity or sorority
Recommendation: A letter written by a member of the fraternity or sorority recommending men or women for membership
Ritual: The values and beliefs by which members of an organization live which is oftentimes depicted in organizational ceremonies
Recruitment/Rush/Intake: The activity by which chapters seek new members
Quota: The specified number of new members each Panhellenic sorority can accept during formal recruitment
