Overview:
Latino Student Outreach (LSO) provides students with academic support services and programs to enrich the personal and academic development of Latino students. MAP serves as a central resource for Latinos on campus to support and encourage student persistence.
Support Program Goals:

  • Increase Latino student retention and progression
  • Provide academic, social and leadership opportunities
  • Orient new first year students to campus life

Goizueta Scholarship for First-Year Hispanic and Latino Students

The Goizueta Foundation typically offers two renewable scholarships to qualified applicants of Hispanic/Latino lineage for their four-year undergraduate college career at UWG. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be of Hispanic or Latino lineage and a Georgia resident (preference given to Carroll, Coweta, Haralson, Heard or Paulding counties).
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.6.
  • Have a minimum SAT score of 410 math / 430 Critical reading or an ACT minimum score of 17 math / 17 English.
  • Agree to participate in the Multicultural Achievement Programs (MAPs) and meet with a MAP counselor bi-weekly.
  • Submit a 500 word essay indicating why you feel you should be selected for the scholarship and how you can contribute to the Hispanic/Latino population at UWG.

Qualified applicants for the Goizueta Scholarship must be accepted to UWG by February 1st and be able to participate in the President's Day Scholarship program if invited.

Latino Student Meet and Greet
During the summer months prior to attending UWG, Latino students and their families are invited to spend time with the MAP Coordinator and other staff members to discuss academics, student life, and other information unique to UWG. Participants meet with current Latino students to share their UWG experiences.

Latino First Year Welcome
This program serves entering Latino first year students academically and socially through a variety of activities before fall classes begin, which includes current students walking first year students through their class schedules, campus resources and housing. 

Latino Student Academic Coaching
Latino student academic coaching assists all Latino students with adapting to the college environment. Students are contacted individually by the MAP Coordinator to set-up weekly appointments with the MAP coordinator to monitor and support the academic needs of each student.

Alas De Excelencia (Wings of Excellence)
Alas De Excelencia is a bi weekly study group designed for students to enhance study skills and guide academic progress.

The United States Hispanic Institute and Latino College Leadership Summit
This conference is designed for Latino student leaders in the southeastern United States to build relationships and develop programming ideas for their individual campuses. The conference is a collaborative effort with Georgia State University and the United States Hispanic Institute. Each year MAP takes several students to take part in this leadership opportunity.
