      Noise and Use Policies

      Ingram Library facilities, collections, and services support teaching and learning; showcase scholarship; and reflect distinct characteristics and resources of the university.  In order to sustain a welcoming, supportive, and safe environment, library faculty and staff expect all users to follow the policies and laws established by the University and the State of Georgia.  Penalties for violations of these standards range from warnings and temporary expulsion from the building to suspension or expulsion from the university to referral to the legal system for prosecution.

      To ensure that all can use the building effectively, the library floors are intended to be used as followed.  (Group sizes are suggestions for optimal use)

      Ground Floor: Quiet conversation level, small groups, individual study

      First Floor: General conversation levels, large groups of 5-8, small groups of 2-4, individual study, group use of computers when needed. Students may move furniture within an area in order to accommodate their research or learning needs but are expected to return it to its original location.

      Second Floor: Quiet conversation level, small groups of 2-4, individual study, group study rooms (are NOT soundproof so maintain quiet conversation level), students may move furniture within an area but are expected to return it to its original location.

      Third Floor: No conversation levels, individual study, quiet reflection, individual use of computers only, group study rooms and presentation practice room (quiet conversation level).

      The third floor also contains the Lactation Room (from the elevators, go to the far right corner).  Nursing mothers, as well as mothers needing to feed infants and toddlers, may check out the key for this room at the front desk.  Noise levels in the room should be kept to a minimum out of respect for students who may be studying nearby.

      Group study rooms keys can be checked out by 2 or more students at a time.  Both users must be present and give their IDs to get a key. Groups may check out a key for 2 hours at a time, and there must be at least two students in the room for the duration of the checkout period.  If all the study group rooms are checked out, groups may not recheck the key out for a additional time.

      Users of the library must follow the UWG Conduct Code.  Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to:

      • Causing disturbances that interfere with the normal use of the library, including rowdiness, excessive noise, and offensive interpersonal behavior
      • Damaging, defacing, removing, or misusing library materials and furniture
      • Violating campus policies concerning alcohol and drugs.  The UWG Conduct Code Section 7.00 expressly forbids consumption of alcohol on university premises, except at authorized events, as well as “being in an intoxicated condition as made manifest by disorderly, obscene, or indecent conduct.”
      • Unauthorized use, possession, or storage of any weapon
      • Engaging in sexual activities
      • Harassing or stalking library staff or users
      • Soliciting library staff or users
      • Tampering with emergency mechanisms such as fire alarms 
      • Using emergency exits in non-emergencies
      • Being in unauthorized areas of the building, including employee-only areas, remaining after closing, and failing to leave during a drill or emergency
      • Taking library materials or lab equipment (such as copy paper, computer periphera, toners, staplers, etc) without authorization
      • Leaving children unattended in the library.  In accordance with the Unaccompanied Children policy (see next accordion section), children under 12 must be under the supervision of an adult.  Unattended children will be reported to Public Safety.
      • Violations of the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco policy, found on this page. 

      Users violating UWG conduct codes or exhibiting unacceptable behaviors may be warned and asked to cease the problem behavior. Depending on the nature of the problem and/or its recurrence,  library staff will take appropriate action, up to and including contacting University Police. Individuals or groups who do not follow these guidelines may be accountable to both civil authorities and the University of West Georgia.

    • Unaccompanied Children in the Library

      Campus facilities are designed for use by members of the campus community, which includes students, faculty, staff and visitors. The University Library welcomes children accompanying a parent or adult caregiver, but parents or adult caregivers should be aware that the library's collection of materials and unfiltered Internet access is designed to meet the research and curricular needs of its primary users, adults.

      Furthermore, the UWG Library is open to the public, a situation that can present risks to children. For these reasons, parents or adult caregivers must recognize their responsibilities for the safety and security of children in their care, and for monitoring exposure to materials they may consider inappropriate to children.

      Please note:
      • Children under 12 must be under the supervision of an adult* who assumes responsibility for him or her while in the Library.
      • Parents and adults must monitor all activities and behavior of their children while they are in the library and are responsible for any damage to property done by the child.
      • Library computers are to be used in accordance with the Ingram Library Computer Use Policy. • Any patron creating a disturbance, regardless of age, will be asked to leave the library. If the person involved is underage, Public Safety will be called to take custody of him/her.
      • If a child is left unattended in the library or in the event of an emergency situation, staff will notify Public Safety. Public Safety will also be notified if an unaccompanied child is in the Library at closing [staff on duty should remain in the building with the child until s/he is picked up by an officer].

      *an adult is defined to be a person who is at least age 18.

    • Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Policy
      Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Policy

      To preserve the library’s collections, equipment, and furnishings and to provide a comfortable environment, consumption of food and beverages is allowed within reason in all areas of the library, with the exception of Special Collections and the Center for Public History.

      Users are expected to use care and good judgment when consuming food and beverages in computer workstation areas of the library. Beverages taken into classrooms or computer workstation areas should be in covered containers.

      Dispose of all empty containers properly.  Clean spills, and if needed, contact a library employee for supplies and assistance immediately.  Notify a library employee of any damaged materials or equipment.  

      In accordance with The Board of Regents' Tobacco and Smoke-Free Campus Policy, use of tobacco in any form inside the library, or on campus, is prohibited, including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco. E-cigarettes are also forbidden.

      Ingram Library will feature fliers for official university-sponsored programs and events on the library’s digital display screens. To ensure that the library maintains a balance between library and external content, the library reserves the right to limit the number of slides included; therefore the library cannot guarantee that all fliers submitted will be included in the rotation.

      Preferred format

      Ingram Library prefers letter-sized (8.5 x 11”) or 11 x 17” fliers in .jpg or .pdf format. If possible, please include materials in both portrait and landscape orientation. Files submitted in other proportions may be resized to fit within the library’s template, which may or may not affect viewing quality. Files submitted in only one orientation may only be displayed on the corresponding display screens (so portrait oriented fliers may be displayed on portrait oriented screens and not on landscape oriented screens).

      Email submissions to Angela Pashia, apashia@westga.edu. Displays are currently updated once a week, so materials need to be submitted at least one week in advance. Requests should indicate the preferred start and end date for inclusion in the display rotation.

      Bulletin Board Use

      Where can advertising be placed within the library?

      Bulletin boards:

      (located near the main and second floor bathroom) are the only places posters/flyers are allowed within the library. Items found anywhere else in the library will be removed and thrown away. In some cases, they will be reported to Center for Student Involvement and organizations can have their posting privileges suspended.

      Dry Erase Boards:

      Sometimes these boards are used to direct student traffic or inform students of current issues related to the library. Other than that, the dry erase boards are only available to help facilitate studying, not to be used to advertise student activities. 

      Who can place posters and fliers in the library?

      Student Groups/Organizations: 

      Organizations run by students (Greeks, clubs, etc.) may post fliers on the two bulletin boards in the library. They must obtain pre-approval at CSI before placing the posters. Posters and fliers without a stamp will be removed without notification. More information can be found in the current Student Organization Handbook.

      University Departments: 

      Department poster/flyers should be properly labeled with the department name. They do not need to obtain permission to post to the boards. Please keep the posters to a minimum, as we do not have a lot of space. 

      Can individuals or businesses advertise in the library?

      Individuals and Businesses are not allowed to advertise in the library. Please note that off-campus entities must contact Auxiliary Services (678) 839-6525 to learn about advertising on campus.

      The group or individual requesting space hereafter will be referred to as “CLIENT” and the
      University of West Georgia’s Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library will be referred to as “LIBRARY.”

      UWG Policy Compliance

      Organizations and groups will be responsible for adhering to all UWG policies and
      procedures: Auxiliary Services Policies Page

      • Due to lack of support staff, the LIBRARY cannot accept weekend reservations nor reservations from students.
      • Animals are not permitted in the LIBRARY except for service animals.
      • CLIENT agrees to obtain prior approval before sale of any items in facility is undertaken (e.g., books, recordings). CLIENT shall be responsible for securing copyright clearance of any works so protected, which are presented in LIBRARY’s facility. This shall include performance rights, recordings, readings, and photography rights where applicable.
      • All publicity and press releases must be coordinated with University Communications and
        Marketing (UCM) and Publications and Printing.
      • Publicity and press releases should indicate event location. Here is an example.
        “Ingram Library, University of West Georgia, 1st floor.”
      • A final copy of a press release, poster, or any event involving a LIBRARY space/area should be e- mailed to bprenell@westga.edu for inclusion on the LIBRARY’s News and Events page. 
      Care and Maintenance of Facility
      • All areas requested by CLIENT will be inspected by LIBRARY personnel prior to the event.
      • After the event, CLIENT should not leave the area until LIBRARY personnel gives final approval that the area was returned to its original state prior to the event. CLIENT will be responsible for signing the “Client Sign Off” document after the event unless otherwise stated by the Events Coordinator.
      • CLIENT is expected to maintain facilities and property in the same condition that they were provided. Damages in excess of “fair wear and tear” will be assessed based upon replacement costs of damaged property.
      • CLIENT will be responsible for supervision of LIBRARY furnishings at the time of the event.
      • CLIENT agrees to reimburse the LIBRARY for any damage to the LIBRARY facilities, furnishings, or any other property occurring as a result of the activities or actions of the CLIENT participants and personnel during the time of the event. A clean up fee may be assessed if conditions are not met or excessive cleanup is needed.
      • CLIENT will be permitted to decorate on the day of the event, as long as there is not an event previously scheduled.
      • Decorations should be free standing or table-top.
      • No pasting, taping, nailing or otherwise attaching any items to walls, ceiling or furniture is permitted. No rice, bubbles, glitter, sand, fireworks, processed snow, bird seed, or other substance that would take excessive clean-up is permitted inside or outside the facility.
      Work Orders, Catering, Security, Equipment
      • CLIENT will be responsible for sending custodial, facilities, and catering orders, unless otherwise stated by the LIBRARY.
      • University move crews are the only authorized personnel to move LIBRARY furnishings with the exception of individual wheeled or stackable chairs.
      • CLIENT will arrange for University crews to move and return LIBRARY furnishings unless otherwise stated by the LIBRARY.
      • If expected attendance exceeds 100, CLIENT is responsible for notifying University Police and Risk Management.
      • In the event where CLIENT brings guests who have to potential to cause controversy or are
        controversial in nature, University Police must be notified by CLIENT.
      • CLIENT will be responsible for all costs associated with security, if needed.
      • CLIENT agrees to LIBRARY approval over all equipment brought into the facility and removal of equipment if deemed necessary by LIBRARY to prevent potential damage to any part of the building or create a hazard for occupants.
      • CLIENT agrees that the LIBRARY will not be responsible for the protection of CLIENT equipment/items or equipment/items that the CLIENT uses for the event, including but not limited to theft, fire, accidents, cookware, food, etc.
      • CLIENT must notify LIBRARY if the participants or nature of the event will cause excessive noise or amplified sound. The nature of sound for an event should be generally confined to the area reserved for the event.
        Modifications, Cancellations, Hold Harmless Agreement.
      • LIBRARY reserves to the right to deny reservations to a CLIENT.
      • This agreement may only be modified or cancelled by LIBRARY.
      • If the CLIENT is unable to perform for any reason beyond the control of the CLIENT, including without limitation, illness, accident, or other incapacity, fires, labor disputes, or Act of Nature, this agreement shall terminate with respect to any performance so affected and neither party shall be liable to the other for any damages arising from the CLIENT’s inability to perform and must notify the LIBRARY as soon as possible.
      • In the event the LIBRARY is prevented from staging the event due to inclement weather or any unavoidable reason, the event will be rescheduled by both parties.
      • This agreement may be modified by mutual consent, provided any and all modifications shall be in writing and signed by authorized officials of the LIBRARY and of the CLIENT.
      • Cancellations must be made 5 business days in advance to the Ingram Library Administration Office or e-mailed to the Events Coordinator.
      • CLIENT must meet with the Events Coordinator at least 5 business days before the date of the event to discuss logistics and accommodation needs if deemed necessary.
      • Hold Harmless Agreement
        CLIENT agrees to hold the LIBRARY and the LIBRARY Administration blameless in the event of any personal injuries, loss of life, theft or damages arising out of use of contracted facilities. The LIBRARY is not responsible for damage or loss of any article or equipment kept or left in LIBRARY classroom, office, or space before, during or after an event.
      • Neither party shall discriminate against a University employee, student or spectator solely on the basis of race, color, sexual orientation, creed, national origin, age, nor handicap.

      • Let us do the re-shelving! Place books and periodicals on the carts (located on all floors) after you have finished browsing library materials. We scan materials browsed and use this information for new acquisitions and relevance of material.
      • Do not lean back in chairs, stand on shelving and other library furnishings (other than step stools), or deface books and periodicals.
      • Please use the rolling step stools, which are located throughout the stacks, to obtain items on the top shelves. Please ask for assistance if you are unable to retrieve an item.

      Borrowing Privileges and Responsibilities

      Faculty, staff and students must present their own current validated University photo ID, current driver's license or passport to borrow library materials. Borrowing privileges may not be transferred to another borrower. All materials to be checked out should be brought to the desk no later than 15 minutes prior to closing. At 10 minutes before closing computers are shut down and the checkout period ends for the day, so that staff on duty are free to supervise closing routines.

      Borrowers are responsible for all materials charged out on their account.  ID Cards and borrowed materials should be kept in a secure location and never loaned to others.  A lost card should be reported immediately to University Police and a replacement obtained from the ID Office.  Borrowers are also responsible for the repair costs of any library items returned in damaged condition.

      Most communications from the Library (including fines/fees notices and recalls) are sent to our users by email. For students and faculty, the email address used is supplied through a BANNER update. If you would prefer a different address you will need to contact Circulation and ask for the change. It is imperative that you check your email account regularly when you have items checked out. Failure to receive a notification does not relieve the borrower of the obligation to return materials when they are due, or to pay all assessed charges. It is the borrower's responsibility to maintain a current address (including e-mail) with the Library.  Changes of address (including email) should be reported immediately.  The Library is not responsible for undelivered mail.

      Fines are assessed to insure prompt return of materials; there is no minimum fine or grace period.  The chart which follows details the standard loan periods and fines which apply to all borrower types. Fines may be paid at the Circulation Desk by cash, check, MasterCard or VISA (Credit card payments are also accepted by phone).  Charges and fines are cumulative.  They are not erased at the end of a semester or academic year. 

      You are responsible for returning or renewing library material whether or not you receive an overdue notice.

       Reference Materials
      The Reference Collection (which includes Periodicals) is a core collection of materials which provide immediate and succinct information to users, or a link to in-depth and complex sources.  In order to serve the greatest number of people these materials must remain readily available.  Therefore, Reference materials and periodicals circulate only under the following conditions:
      1. The item is required for class presentation.
      2. The material must be copied, scanned, or be used to make slides/transparencies which can only be done elsewhere.
      3. The loan period is one (1) day with no renewals.
      4. The overdue charge is $5.00 per day, per item, to a maximum of $25.00 per item.  If the material is still not returned after 5 days, the patron will be barred until the item is returned and the fine paid.
      5. Material will circulate from the Circulation Desk, but will require a permission slip from the Reference Department.  The permission slip will be kept on file in Circulation.
      6. This policy applies to all users, including faculty and staff.
    • Renewals
      Renewals

      Renewals are subject to the patron's status (student, faculty/staff, community) and item type. Please stop by or contact the front desk to ask about the particular item you want renewed. If the proper conditions are met, renewals can be made by presenting the item at the Circulation desk, over the phone by calling 678-839-6502, or by presenting your user card at the Circulation desk. 

      Renewals will not be granted if:

      1. the title has been recalled
      2. the renewal limit has been exceeded; or
      3. there is a block on the borrower's record

      Failure to Pay Fines and Fees

      Students should note that University registration, transcripts, grades, diplomas, checks, etc., are blocked until a financial obligation to the University is met.  Additionally, Guest Borrower Card holders' privileges are suspended until late material is returned and library fines and fees are paid.

      Recalls
      If a desired item is checked out to another user, a recall can be initiated at the Circulation Desk.  The person in possession of the item that is recalled will be guaranteed a loan period of 28 days (or less depending on its item type). Items needed for Reserves may be recalled at any time.  When the recalled item is returned, the requester will be notified.  Recalled items will be held at the Circulation Desk for seven days. NOTE:  Materials are not recalled for Guest Borrowers.

      Fines of borrowers who fail to respond to recall notices will start on the eighth day after the day the notice is sent.  When recalled items are returned late, additional fines of $1.00 per item per day will be added to regular overdue fines.

      Searches
      If an item has not been checked out and cannot be located in the stacks, a search can be conducted by Stacks. Fill out the form located on this page to be notified if the item is found.

      Reserves
      Instructors are encouraged to place study materials on reserve at the Circulation Desk.  Loan periods for reserve materials vary from 1 hour to 7 days.  You must have a current validated University ID card to check out reserves.  Only one reserve item may be checked out at a time.  Reserves are not renewable.  Students should return reserve materials directly to the Circulation Desk to avoid fines.  If reserves are left on study tables, the student will be responsible for all fines incurred before the reserves are discharged from their record.       Group Study Rooms
      There are several Group Study Rooms in the Library that are available for currently enrolled students.  Validated UWG ID Cards from two students are required for study room use. Both students must be present to check out the room.

      Laptops
      Students with valid UWG ID cards may check laptops from the circulation desk.  Laptops are checked out for four hours and may be used anywhere in the library.  Each laptop has wi-fi, the full Microsoft Office Suite, and prints to both the main and third floor printers.

      Lost and Found
      The Circulation Desk is the central repository for "Lost and Found" items in the Ingram Library.  Items are periodically moved to the University's main Lost and Found by University Police.

      Graduate Students

      Graduate students may check out regular materials until the end of the current academic semester in recognition of their frequent need to be involved in more extended research activities.  (See chart under Loan Periods). Graduate students who are not currently enrolled in classes at UWG retain full borrowing privileges until they reach 3 consecutive semesters (12 months) without enrolling. This will allow those students time to complete a thesis, Ed.S research project, or dissertation.

      Faculty

      Faculty may check out regular materials until the end of the current academic year.  They are asked to bring in their materials each May to renew them for another year.  (See chart under Loan Periods restrictions.) All faculty and staff have full library privileges, including Inter-Library Loan (ILL), remote access to GALILEO and the UWG Library's licensed databases, or access to other resources whose contracts with the Library require that the user be enrolled. See the "Faculty" section of this accordion for more specific details. 

      Alumni, Retirees, and Community

      Alumni status can be obtained by presenting proof of graduation from UWG and a photo ID with a current address. Once the status has been established, alumni may continue to use their UWG ID to check items out. If the patron cannot locate their UWG ID, they may use their driver's license to check out items. Alumni may check out 7 items at a time for a period of 28 days (items may be renewed by phone).

      Retirees

      Retirees may either apply for a Guest Borrower card or obtain a current UWG ID card from the Card Office on the top floor of the UCC. Retirees may check out 7 items at a time for 28 days (items may be renewed by phone).

      Community Residents

      Residents of the local area may apply for a Guest Borrower card at the Circulation Desk. Applicants must be residents of one of the following counties: Carroll (GA), Coweta (GA), Douglas (GA), Haralson (GA), Heard (GA), Paulding (GA), Cleburne (AL), or Randolph (AL), and provide proof of local address. Community Borrowers may have up to 3 items checked out at a time for a period of 28 days (items may be renewed by phone). After 6 months, Community Borrowers in good standing may request to have their borrowing limit increased to 7 items. (High School students remain at three).

      High School Students

      High school students (grades 9-12) will need the signature of a parent or sponsoring teacher in the presence of a Circulation staff member. (Students in the 8th grade or below are not eligible to receive a Guest Borrower's card).

      General Policies applying to all Guest Borrowers

      The Guest Borrower Card is non-transferable and the individual named on the card is responsible for all items borrowed with the card and for any fines or charges for damages or lost materials.  After approval of application, the Guest Borrower's library privileges will continue in effect as long as the patron uses the library on a regular basis and does not abuse privileges. (A school-sponsored high school student's privileges will expire at the end of the academic year). Issuance of a Guest Borrower card does not guarantee access to all library facilities, materials, or services; for example, Guest Borrowers, Alumni, and Retirees may not place InterLibrary Loan requests, GIL Express requests, or obtain the password for remote access to online databases. Guests are invited to use our desktop computers to conduct research (usernames and passwords are available at the front desk). However, wifi access is unavailable to Guest Borrowers.

      Borrowers with Disabilities

      Circulation staff will retrieve library materials or provide assistance in using library equipment for borrowers with disabilities.  From the main elevator, all parts of the library are accessible by wheelchair.  Handicapped restroom facilities and wheelchair-accessible water fountains are located on all floors.

      Gifts and Donations

      The Ingram Library welcomes gifts and donations to the library as long as they fill a need in the collection. We kindly ask that potential gifts and donations adhere to the following procedure:

      • The Ingram Library does not allow an unscheduled drop-off of possible gifts and donations. Unexpected donations that are left at the front desk will be discarded.
      • If you have items that may be a benefit to the Ingram Library collection, we ask that you prepare an itemized list that includes author, title and edition number (if relevant). It helps to have the ISBN but that isn’t necessary.  We prefer itemized lists that are formatted in MS Word or Excel (or an equivalent program). 
      • Send an email to acqdept@westga.edu with your contact information, and attach the itemized list of possible donations. Please make sure your full name, email address and phone number is included.
      • Once we have thoroughly evaluated the list, someone from the Technical Services department will contact you via phone or email about the titles we wish to add to the collection. If we can’t accept any of the titles, we will at least send an email response letting you know that the material doesn’t satisfy any of the library’s needs.
      • Once items are accepted, the Ingram Library will provide an official letter acknowledging the donations along with a Gift-In-Kind Form. If you plan to include the donation on tax documents, the Gift-In-Kind Form needs to be filled out by the donor so a proper value can be assigned to the items donated.
      • The Gift-In-Kind Form needs to be returned to the Technical Services department so we can verify the donation and forward the paperwork to the UWG Foundation, Inc. The UWG Foundation can then send the donor an official document for tax purposes.

      A few items to note:

      • We encourage the donation of monographs written by current UWG faculty members.
      • The Ingram Library is not allowed to assign values to any of the items that are donated. If donated items will be reported on tax documents, it is up to the donor to calculate the fair market value of the item(s).
      • Items that are possible donations must be in good condition and able to stand the daily wear-and-tear of an academic library.
      • The Ingram Library reserves the right to accept an item as a donation and then discard it if the item is in poor condition.
    • Faculty
      A. Borrowing Privileges:

      The faculty, emerita faculty, and staff of the University of West Georgia have full privileges; however, only the faculty may retain circulating items (except videos, music CDs and tapes) for the duration of the academic year. However, if an item has been recalled by another user, and the faculty member has had the use of it for at least 28 days, s/he must return it within 7 calendar days from the date on the notification. Faculty members who fail to return recalled materials within the time allotted will be charged $1.00 per day for those items. (See Section B below for loan periods applying to periodicals, videos, music CDs, reference materials, etc.)

      All library materials borrowed by faculty must be returned or renewed at the end of each academic year, no later than the Spring Graduation Day. Items which a faculty member needs to keep longer than this may be renewed: however, the materials must be brought into the Library for renewal during the final two weeks of the term--they may not be renewed over the phone. Items not returned or renewed by the May Graduation Day will be considered delinquent and the user's record will be suspended (meaning that no further charges are possible) until such materials are returned/renewed. All other Library privileges will also be suspended, except that suspended faculty members will at all times be allowed to place materials on Reserve for student use. Sixty (60 ) calendar days from the date on which a faculty or staff member's borrowing privileges become suspended due to non-return of Library materials, notification of items overdue will be sent to the individual's Dean or cost center supervisor. If the materials have not been returned after 30 additional calendar days have elapsed, they will be considered LOST, and a bill for the replacement cost of the items, including a processing fee, will be forwarded to the Business Office. The amount due will then be deducted from the individual's next scheduled paycheck and credited to the Library's account. The cost of any items which are returned within 30 days after the paycheck deduction has occurred will be reimbursed through the Business Office (minus the processing fee, which is not refundable).

      Neither faculty nor staff will be charged overdue fines except for overdue Reference Books OR recalled materials which have not been returned within 7 calendar days from the date on the notification OR InterLibrary Loans not returned by the date due on the book label (see below). Fines for overdue Reference materials, recalled items and ILLs are $1.00 per day. Fines for recalled materials begin accruing on the 8th day after the date on the notification; fines for ILLs begin accruing on the 1st day after the due date on the book label. All patrons are expected to pay for lost or damaged material.

      Most communications from the Library are sent via email to your official UWG email address; therefore, it is incumbent upon you to check your UWG email regularly. Failure to receive notices does not absolve you from responsibility for responding promptly to recalls or paying all charges assessed to your account.

      Faculty and staff ID cards are non-transferable, and may not be loaned to students* or family members for the purpose of borrowing materials or using library facilities. Family members must obtain ID cards in their own name and with their own ID number.

      *if necessary, a faculty member may grant permission to a graduate assistant to check out library materials on his/her i.d. See Appendices A and B for sample forms. New forms must be filled out in paper and returned with faculty signatures for each term. Faculty members are encouraged to periodically review their own Library records in order to see what materials are currently charged to their accounts.

      During any period when a faculty or staff member is enrolled in a course, s/he is ethically bound to abide by student circulation periods for any materials which are checked out of the Library in support of his/her coursework. If any faculty or staff member abuses his/her privileges in a manner which negatively impacts fellow classmates, the Library will revoke faculty/staff privileges for the period during which the faculty or staff member is enrolled as a student.

      Students enrolled in courses on or off campus have full library privileges. (See Section B below for loan periods and fine policies.)

      Members of faculty and staff families have the same borrowing privileges as Guest Borrowers and are expected to return all materials by their due date. Standard fine policies will apply to these patrons. Additionally, they are required to check out all items in their own names, not in the name of the family member employed by the University of West Georgia; therefore, they are required to either apply for a Guest Borrower's card at the Circulation Desk in Ingram Library, or obtain a new UWG ID card with their own ID number on it. (See Section B below for loan periods and fine policies.)

      Retired faculty and retired staff have library privileges; however, some services are unavailable to them, such as remote access to GALILEO and UWG-provided online databases, Inter-Library Loan, and any services requiring an account number. The lending and fine policies which apply to currently enrolled students will apply to these users. A retired faculty member who is still engaged in a scholarly research project may be granted a longer loan period (6 months instead of 28 days) upon application to the Library Director. To apply, s/he must write a letter of request to the Director, describing the research project and specifying the date by which the project will be completed. If the request is granted, the individual is required to adhere strictly to the regulations regarding prompt return of recalled materials for other users.

      Faculty and staff who resign may apply for Guest Borrower status.

      Graduate students: Graduate students have a longer loan period than undergraduates, and may check out regular materials until the end of the current academic term instead of the usual 28 days, in recognition of their frequent need to be involved in more extended research activities. However, if an item has been recalled by another user, and the Graduate student has had the use of it for at least 28 days, s/he must return it within 7 calendar days from the date on the notification. Graduate students who fail to return recalled materials within the time allotted will be charged $1.00 per day for those items. (See Section B below for loan periods and fine schedules.)

      Graduate students who are not currently enrolled in classes at UWG, but who are;completing a thesis or Ed.S research project will be granted, upon application, Guest Borrower privileges. To receive full library privileges, they should be enrolled in their College's or Department's project completion course (outlined in Graduate Catalog, General Academic Policies). Only officially enrolled students will have Inter-Library Loan privileges, dial-in access to GALILEO or access to other resources whose contracts with the library require that the user be enrolled.

      Doctoral students enrolled in the joint UWG-UGA program will be granted most library privileges, including ILL service and reciprocal borrowing privileges at other USG libraries, provided their major professors forward the students' names, addresses and ID numbers to the Registrar's Office, with a copy to the Ingram Library Circulation Department, each academic term. Contracted services will be available only during those terms in which students are registered at the University of West Georgia; however, similar services may be obtained from cooperating institutions if students are enrolled there. As with all other students, joint-enrolled students must present a valid UWG ID card if they wish to check out library materials.

      B. Loan periods and Fines: 

      Fines are assessed to insure prompt return of materials; there is no minimum fine or grace period. As previously noted, faculty/staff are exempt from fines except for Reference Books and recalled items which are not returned promptly. The chart wh ich follows details the standard loan periods and fines which apply to students; exceptions for faculty and staff are noted.

       C. Reserve Materials:

      Professors may sometimes wish to place materials,* including their own personal copies, on reserve for their students' use. Generally, all required readings should be put on reserve in order to ensure equitable access. This may be done at any time during an academic term, but a minimum of 3 days must be allowed for processing. Titles from reading lists and recommended supplemental readings should remain in the open stacks unless they are personal copies, in which case it is advisable, for security and convenience, to put these on reserve also. The library may limit the amount of material placed on reserve for a class. Experience and usage figures show that a moderate number of reserve items is usually sufficient.In all cases, copyright regulations must be observed. (Even though a faculty member's borrowing privileges may be suspended, s/he will still be allowed to place materials on reserve, in order that his/her students may not be disadvantaged).

      All reserve services are handled through the Circulation Department; Reserve Requests must be made online through Docutek using the link on the Library's homepage. Requests should be submitted at least one week before classes start whenever possible. An early request allows the Library to transfer the materials from the circulating collection before reading assignments are made. Complete bibliographic citations must be entered for each item.

      Unless otherwise specified by the professor, reserve items are retained on reserve until the end of the current academic term and are automatically removed and returned to the circulating collection (or if a personal copy, to the faculty member) at that time.

      *Items owned by the Library which may NOT be placed on Reserve: any materials which are already limited to in-building use, e.g., periodicals and materials in Reference and Special Collections. Since these items are already restricted from circulating outside the Library, there is no justification for placing them on Reserve, where other users would not think to look for them.

      D. Reference Materials & Periodicals:

      The Reference Collection (which includes Periodicals) is a core collection of materials which provide immediate and succinct information to users, or a link to in-depth and complex sources. In order to serve the greatest number, these materials must remain readily available. Therefore, Reference materials and periodicals circulate only under the following conditions: item is required for class presentation, or the material must be copied, scanned or used to make slides/ transparencies which can only be done elsewhere. The loan period is one day with no renewals. The overdue charge, per item, is $5.00 per day, maximum $25.00; if material is still not returned after 5 days, the patron will be barred until item is returned and fine paid. This policy applies to all users, including faculty and staff.

      Overdue Charges

      Items accrue overdue fines of $1 a day after the due date. Items that are declared lost will accrue a $100 replacement charge (we reserve the right to charge more based on the lending library's charges). We reserve the right to suspend ILL borrowing until all fines are paid.

      Copyright Information

      The ILL office cooperates with the copyright guidelines of the federal government & individual publishers. We may turn down requests due to copyright restrictions or charges. We will attempt to refer you to a location where you can obtain the item.

      GIL Express
      Who is Eligible?

      All currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff who are in good standing at their Home Library (see participating institutions) are eligible to use GIL Express. Retired faculty and staff should check with their Home Library to determine if they are eligible to use this service. A picture ID card is required to use GIL Express at any USG library. The preferred form of identification is a current, valid picture ID card that is issued by the patron's Home institution. Also acceptable is a government issued current, valid picture ID such as a driver's license or a Georgia ID card, a US passport or a US military ID.

      Your Home Library is responsible for keeping the patron database current for your institution. If your Home Library does not have you in their patron database, you will not be able to use GIL Express.  Visit our GIL Express page

      Lost Charges
      Lost Books Fees

      If a GIL Express borrower loses a book, a reasonable time is allowed for searching. If the book is not found a lost book fee is billed to the borrower. This includes the price of the book and a processing fee. The price of a lost book is set by the library that owns the book. The processing fee is set at $35.00 and is in addition to the price of the book.

      The average price of an academic book is $66.00 (The Bowker's Annual Library and Book Trade Almanac 2002, 47th edition).

      The processing fee for one lost GIL Express book is $35.00. This fee is set by a state-wide policy and is based on the average cost to an individual library to replace one copy of a book that is already in its collection. Once paid, the processing fee is non-refundable.

      Replacement copies for Lost Books

      Some libraries in The University System of Georgia may occasionally accept a replacement copy of a lost book in lieu of a lost book payment. This is at the discretion of the library that owns the book that was lost. Arrangements should be made between the patron who borrowed the book and the library that owns the book. It is at the discretion of the library to charge the processing fee when accepting the replacement copy of a lost book.

      Overdue Fines

      If you have GIL Express material from any of the USG libraries that is overdue, your borrowing privileges will be blocked. This block will be effective at all libraries including your Home Library and you may be blocked in your home institution's Registrar/Bursar system.

      You will not be assessed overdue fines unless the item has been recalled.

      What are recall fines?

      Recall Fines: If a University System of Georgia library chooses to charge recall fines for materials checked out through GIL Express the fines will be $2.50 a day for each recalled item. Recall fines apply to all patrons.

      What is a recall?

      If an item that you need is already checked out to someone else you may wish to place a recall through your local GIL catalog, if your library allows recalls. A recall ensures that you will be notified when the item is returned, and that it will be held in your name for a set number of days. Recalls may not be placed through the Universal Catalog.

      Are You a Distance Learner?

      The distance learning community includes students taking classes online or at one of our off-campus locations, such as the Newnan Center. All distance education students are entitled to receive library support services from the Distance Learning Library Services Office.

      A student who is enrolled in both a distance education and an on-campus class during any given semester may only receive this service for the online and off-campus classes.

      Using Other Libraries

      Need a book but don't come to campus? Here are your options:

      Use another library within the University System:
      Possession of a current UWG ID is preferred, but with another acceptable picture ID (such as your driver's license), you can check out books at any other University System Library, as long as you have current status in our library user database. This means that you must be registered currently or employed by UWG and not owe any fines or fees from a previous semester. You can verify your status by logging into Your Account in our library catalog (for step-by-step instructions on how to do that, click HERE).

      Have books from other University System of Georgia libraries sent to a USG library near your home or workplace:
      Check the Universal Catalog to see if another USG library owns the book you want and place a GIL Express Request.

      Use an ARCHE CARD:
      The University of West Georgia is a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission on Higher Education, and you may be eligible to obtain an ARCHE card, which provides borrowing privileges at many private academic libraries in the Atlanta Metro Area. Learn more about ARCHE. You may request a card by contacting our circulation desk or our interlibrary loan office.

      Use Interlibrary Loan:
      As a West Georgia student, faculty member or staff, you can also borrow materials from other libraries through our Interlibrary Loan office. First, determine that the UWG Library does not own the book or journal that you need, and then use ILLiad to place a request. Register here if you are a first time user. Journal articles are usually delivered electronically to your ILLiad account, and (if you are a distance education student) books/loans borrowed for you can be mailed to your home address upon request to the DLS office. A pre-paid return label is included with each loan.

    Course-specific library workshop scheduling:

    Instructors can request that a librarian create a library instruction workshop for specific courses. To request a session, instructors fill out the Instruction Request Form. The library requests that instructors fill out the form at least 2 weeks prior to the anticipated session dates.

    Good Librations:

    A social workshop series for UWG faculty and staff. These are scheduled by Ingram Library’s Instructional Services department. For more information see the Good Librations page.

    Go PRO!

    Students can sign up for a 30 minute research consultation with a reference librarian, held at the Reference Desk on the first floor of Ingram Library unless otherwise arranged. To facilitate this process, students choose a time slot using the calendar service found on the Schedule a Research Consultation page. Time slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and the available times are Monday-Thursday from 11  AM-5 PM. Should students request specialized subject help, they can fill out the form on that page to have their request routed to the appropriate librarian.

    Instructional Space Usage Policy

    Ingram Library has three dedicated instructional spaces: one on the 1st floor (the "Flex Classroom") and two on the 3rd floor (the "Aquarium" and the "Glassroom").

    Library instructional spaces are limited and demand for them is high. Therefore, the order of priority for scheduling these spaces is:
       Library instruction needs (LIBR1101 and workshops)
       Public History classes
       Center for Academic Success-sponsored tutoring programs
       Other class requests

    Occasionally a non-Library faculty member will ask to use one of Ingram Library's instructional spaces for a class research day (not involving instruction by a librarian). In the fall of 2015 Instructional Services is experimenting with allowing faculty members to reserve a library instructional space for this purpose. This is a pilot program to help Ingram Library determine the demand for this kind of usage. Interested faculty should email Anne Barnhart for further information.

    When the rooms are not reserved for the purposes mentioned above, they are to be open for student use. Student groups may not reserve these spaces. Students using the 3rd floor spaces should keep in mind that these are not group study rooms since the 3rd floor is the quiet floor.

    Library staff and faculty needing space for library instruction workshops or training sessions can schedule the space through the shared calendar system.

    Public History class and Center for Academic Success tutoring session usage is scheduled through the Instructional Services division.

    Library staff and faculty are asked to not schedule workshops until all LIBR1101 and Public History semester-long courses have been scheduled. These are scheduled well in advance of the start of the semester.

    A UWG ID with WolfBucks funds is required for copying and printing in the library. Print jobs can be sent from all lab computers and the cost is 10 cents per page. The library also has photocopiers and their cost is 10 cents per page. Guest borrowers who do not have UWG IDs can obtain a print card from the Circulation Desk.

      Mission Statement

      The Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library supports the mission of the institution and the changing needs of the University through its collections and services. The Ingram Library selects and manages its resources in order to support the broad educational mission of the University and to provide its large and diverse community of students, faculty and staff with access to recorded information. Collection development directly supports the University instruction, research, and public service responsibilities which include curriculum related instruction, extracurricular learning, research, and other campus educational objectives.

      General Policies

      As the institution continues to grow, the policy of the Technical Services team will be to purchase and make available the necessary materials to accommodate growth to support the programs that are added or expanded, especially when it comes to graduate research. The library collects materials in all formats in order to offer the proper research materials for the programs offered by the university.

      Selection Criteria

      Collection development decisions are based on both objective data and the subjective judgments of library faculty, department liaisons, and in consultation with academic departments. Discipline-specific differences in instruction, research, and reliance on library materials must be considered. Objective data to be considered include financial resources available, programs and courses offered, publishing output, enrollment, circulation of materials, interlibrary loans, and comparison with standard bibliographies.

      The Ingram Library supports the statements on collection development contained within the "Standards for College Libraries" adopted by the American Library Association's Association of College and Research Libraries.  Since accrediting agencies, such as the Southern Association, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, generally use these standards to evaluate library collections, it is important that the library use these resources as a matter of consistency.

      The Ingram Library recognizes that the free access to ideas and full freedom of expression are fundamental to the educational process. The Library will attempt to purchase materials which represent a wide variety of viewpoints on religious, political, sexual, social, economic, scientific, and moral issues. To this end, the Library subscribes to and complies with the American Library Association Library Bill of Rights and its accompanying statement of interpretation including, but not limited to statements on Intellectual Freedom, the Freedom to Read, Freedom to View, Access to Electronic Information, Services and Networks, Challenged Materials, and Statement on Labeling.

      The Library does not add or withdraw, at the request of any individual or group, material which has been chosen or excluded on the basis of stated selection criteria. An individual or group questioning the appropriateness of material within the collection will be referred to the Dean of University Libraries.

      The American Library Association's Code of Ethics states that "Librarians must protect each user's right to privacy with respect to information sought, received, and materials consulted, borrowed, or acquired. In addition to Ingram Library adheres to the American Library Association's "Policy on Confidentiality of Library Records" and "Confidentiality of Library Users." Confidentiality is also protected under Georgia law.  Official Code of Georgia, Annotated, Paragraph 24-9-46.

      The Ingram Library complies fully with all of the provisions of the U.S. Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.) and its amendments. The Library strongly supports the Fair Use section of the Copyright Law (17 U.S.C. 107) which permits and protects citizens' rights to reproduce and make other uses of copyrighted works for the purposes of teaching, scholarship and research.

      Budgeting and Allocations

      The allocation formula includes information which is ascertained for each academic department. Specific information includes number of undergraduate majors, number of graduate majors, number of faculty and number of different courses taught by the department as listed in the University catalog.  We track how programs are growing from data supplied by UWG’s Institutional Research Panel.

      Requesting materials

      There are two ways for students and faculty to request materials. There is an online form located on the library’s Online Contact Form page.

      This online form allows a requestor to choose “Item the library should purchase” from a drop-down menu. This generates an email with the information to a departmental email address that gets checked several times a week.  If users prefer to just send an email, those can be sent to acqdept@westga.edu. This is the method of requesting all material, regardless of format.

      Faculty Publishing

      It is a general policy to order one copy of a book that has been published by a member of the UWG faculty.  In some cases, we will order two copies; one will go on the shelf and will be available for check out, the second copy will be a part of Special Collections.

      Textbooks

      The library does not keep a copy of the textbooks that are being used for instruction.  It is the responsibility of the students to purchase the required textbooks for each class. 

      Buying materials for faculty research

      As a general policy we will not purchase materials strictly for a specific faculty member’s research, but we reserve the right to make that decision on a case-by-case basis.

      Last Copy in USG

      In the case of possible titles for discard, the department will look to see if other copies exist within the USG.  The Ingram Library may decide to retain a copy of a possible discard if there are no other copies available from any USG schools.  In some cases, the last copy that exists among the USG libraries will be sent to the University of Georgia so one copy exists for the purpose of interlibrary loan. 

       

      Policies by Format
      Books

      The library adds to the book collection in a variety of ways.  This includes both Firm Orders and Standing Orders; the library also has an Approval Plan with its primary book distributor.  The funds requested for a fiscal year for any kind of book order is primarily based on the budget that we spent the previous fiscal year.  While this is just one part of the allocation formula, the Acquisitions team will make adjustments to the amount of money we request for book buying based on information that we get from our various publishing partners.

      Book buying for the benefit of the individual academic departments occurs in several ways.  The Acquisitions department has a General Fund that we use for a significant portion of Firm Order purchases, especially for titles that are interdisciplinary.  Each academic unit also has a designated amount that the faculty gets to spend at their discretion in order to support current class curriculum; DVD and multimedia materials can be requested with book buying funds.  The Ingram Library has a liaison program and each liaison has their own budget that is used to enhance research materials in their given field in order to help grow the collection.   

      Due to small print runs or hard-to-find materials, it is not uncommon that we have to purchase a used title.  In these cases, we search for the title in a variety of ways in order to find the best possible copy for the most competitive price.   

      Serials

      The serials collection at the Ingram Library is available in print, electronic or microfilm/micro card.  In some cases, there will be overlap between formats.  Some of our vendors offer beneficial pricing for online and print access to research material, and the department is responsible for making the final decision on dual formats based on budgetary concerns and the needs of the academic departments.  The Acquisitions department uses the service of a subscription agent. In the cases when a subscription isn’t available through an agent, we will commit to a direct subscription in order to offer the material to students and faculty.  During times of budgetary restraint, the department will make an informed decision about which serial titles can be cut by looking at any available usage statistics and whether certain titles are no longer needed due to the changes within an academic unit. Library liaisons are also asked to be a part of the decision making process when we need to make cuts to the serial offerings.  Due to some issues with available space for items in print, the department reserves the right to convert a print subscription to electronic access only. 

      Electronic Resources

      The Ingram Library offers several hundred databases for student and faculty research.   These resources include aggregated journal/serial content, newspaper collections, eBooks, and historical artifacts and documents that have been digitized.  Our electronic resources are licensed in accordance with the purchasing regulations of the Board of Regents and in conjunction with the University of West Georgia’s Office of Business and Finance and University Counsel.  Our resources are available to all who are on campus and within our IP range, and any resources that are available off campus are password protected.

      The possible selection of an electronic resource is sometimes referred to the Electronic Resources Committee.  The committee is comprised of three people:  the Head of the Technical Services department, one member of the Instructional Services team, and the departmental liaison for which the content would benefit most.  The committee votes on a recommendation, and a final report is drafted by the Head of Technical Services for the Dean and Associate Dean of Libraries. 

      Theses and Dissertations

      The library is responsible for the binding of theses and dissertations.  One copy of every thesis and dissertation will be kept in the general collection and made available for circulation.  The library makes no other decisions regarding the number of bound copies needed.  It is the responsibility of the student to assess how many copies they will need to print.

      Library facilities, collections, services and programs support teaching and learning; showcase scholarship; and reflect distinct characteristics and resources of the university. The library provides content resources for student research and curricular endeavors; systems and environments for discovery of, preservation of, and access to information resources; and instructional services to support mastering the use of information to excel in research, curricular activities, critical thinking and lifelong learning. 

      The mission of Ingram Library is to provide a range of library services to the University of West Georgia students, faculty, administration, and staff, and to the general West Georgia community. These services increasingly must be delivered at the point of need; whether in the building or off-campus, in person or electronically, with one-on-one reference assistance or in classroom instruction, whether through locally held collections or through traditional or electronic access to materials owned elsewhere.       Irvine Sullivan Ingram Library 

      As the academic heart of the campus, Ingram Library provides online and in-house collections and services to meet curricular needs. The four story building of some 85,000 square feet is open 24 hours a day from Sunday afternoons through Friday evenings, and during the day on Saturday. The main floor of the library is designed for individual and group study, and features areas for group project development. A full-service Starbucks, entered on the west side of the library, faces Love Valley and the Campus Center. The library facility contains electronic classrooms, conference rooms, small group study rooms, and computers and other equipment for accessing materials retained in print, online, recorded, and micro formats.

       Wireless access to internet resources is available throughout the building. Student Technology Assistants are on duty at all hours to help patrons with technology- related needs, and with laptops and other equipment available for student check-out for in-house use. Individuals seeking assistance with library resources and research needs can utilize reference services at the reference desk on the main floor of the library, via telephone, and through the online QuestionPoint 24/7 chat reference service available through the library web site. Individuals may book appointments with librarians through the GoPRO (Personalized Research Option) to explore resources to support their research.

      Library collections include some 400,000 cataloged volumes, over 1,100,000 microforms, over 11,000 audiovisual items, and more than 20,000 maps and charts. The library provides access to some 400 electronic databases and some 50,000 print and electronic serials, including magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. As a selective depository for federal documents, the library houses an extensive collection of United States government publications and provides access to government information available in online and other electronic formats.

      The library participates in state and regional consortia, facilitating extensive access to the collective resources of university system and other libraries. The library catalog, provided through Georgia Interconnected Libraries (GIL), lists materials available in Ingram Library collections, and provides links to catalogs of other libraries. West Georgia students, faculty, and staff may request books from any university system library through the online GIL Express service, a feature of the universal catalog, and they also have check out privileges when visiting system libraries. In addition, the University of West Georgia is a member of the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education (ARCHE), which allows students, faculty and staff to utilize the resources of member libraries. Ingram Library provides interlibrary loan service through its web site, facilitating the borrowing of books from libraries throughout the country. Articles requested through interlibrary loan are transmitted to patrons electronically.

      Library users have access to Georgia Library Learning Online (GALILEO), an online library of databases, full text electronic journals, and reference resources available to all Georgians, as well as to an extensive range of electronic materials selected to support the university’s academic programs. All licensed electronic materials are available to university students and faculty through any computer with internet access. By providing access to an extensive range of online materials, developing an electronic reserve system and online request systems for obtaining materials from other libraries, the library ensures that students enrolled at the university’s remote class sites and in online courses are afforded the same level of library support as those who attend classes on the Carrollton campus. Fax and courier services to off campus class sites, and arrangements with libraries in Newnan and other locations also support off campus students.

      The library pursues an aggressive instruction program. LIBR 1101, a for-credit course which is part of Area B of the Core curriculum, is taught as a face to face class, or students may register for online sections of the course. LIBR 1101 is designed to orient students to doing research in academic libraries and to critically evaluating information and media resources. Library instruction sessions tailored to specific assignments are developed for undergraduate and graduate courses at the request of faculty.

      The library is named in honor of Irvine Sullivan Ingram, the institution’s first president. The glass enclosed lobby overlooks a study garden designed in honor of Maurice Townsend, fifth president of the university, and the Thomas B. Murphy Reading Room, which honors Georgia’s longest-serving House speaker. Speaker Murphy’s State Capitol office was re-created on the library’s ground floor to honor his service to the state. The Murphy office installation is supported with panel and digital exhibits exploring Georgia history from the Depression era through the twenty-first century.

      The library’s Annie Belle Weaver Special Collections provides access to information about the history of the university and the geographic area it serves. Photographs, family histories, and other materials associated with the west Georgia region are included in Special Collections, as are materials on sacred harp music and American psalmody.

      A special effort is being made to acquire the manuscript collections of individuals who have represented the region in state or national legislative bodies. One of the most notable collections is that associated with Georgia’s Political Heritage Program, begun by university faculty in 1985. The collection includes taped interviews with state and national leaders, among them most of Georgia’s post- World War II governors, U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young, U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Georgia House Speaker Tom Murphy. Senator Herman Talmadge was the first interview subject for the program. The Talmadge collection is particularly significant as it includes some thirty-five interviews taped between 1985 and 1995 as well as interviews with his staff and some of his supporters. Special Collections is joined by the Department of History’s Center for Public History and the Department of Political Science & Planning’s Thomas B. Murphy Center for Public Service, which maintain offices and student work space on the library’s ground floor to support the university’s Center for Civic Engagement.

      Ingram Library’s Penelope Melson Society, the library’s friends organization, was founded during the library’s centennial in 2008. The Society supports author visits, presentations by scholars, book discussions, nationally-touring exhibits, exhibit talks, and docent-led tours of exhibits for groups. Members of the Melson Society founded the Second Century Collection to extend library collections. Penelope Stevens Melson, 1879-1969, wife of John Holland Nelson, first principal of the Fourth District Agricultural & Mechanical School, the predecessor of the University of West Georgia, founded the institution’s first library in 1908 and volunteered as its librarian until the couple moved to Hogansville, Georgia in 1920. Mrs. Melson’s service as a community leader who secured educational and training opportunities for the less fortunate provides inspiration for the ongoing development of the library she founded.

      Thomas B. Murphy Holocaust Teacher Training and Resource Center The Thomas B. Murphy Holocaust Teacher Education Training and Resource Center, administered by the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust and located on the second floor of Ingram Library, is the only Holocaust center in the United States devoted to teacher training located in a state- supported institution’s library. With the study of the Holocaust as a catalyst, the Center encourages and supports human understanding and dignity by developing programs to open minds and hearts to the appreciation of all of humankind. The Center’s multimedia resource collection includes books, videotapes, archival, and electronic materials augmented by resources available within the collections of Ingram Library. Working collaboratively with academic departments and area organizations, the Center provides curriculum development assistance, teacher conferences, staff development seminars, exhibits, and other programs.
