As part of being leaders in higher education and in recognizing, honoring, and advancing diversity, inclusion, and equity at the University of West Georgia, and that these efforts are should include acknowledgment of the past, Special Collections staff gathered in August 2018 to write a statement that contextualizes the history of our campus site. We are committed to sharing this statement at the opening of any teaching session or public program in which we make remarks.

Land Acknowledgment

"We acknowledge that the University of West Georgia is on the traditional land of the Muscogee (Creek) people and that campus is located on the former site of the Bonner Plantation where enslaved people of African descent lived and worked. Special Collections hold various primary source materials documenting the history and experiences of peoples indigenous and enslaved in the West Georgia region."
