The University of West Georgia empowers students to turn ambition into achievement, and Lina Martinez is a shining example, transforming her college experience into a global journey that shaped her academic and professional future.

Lina Martinez

Martinez’s life journey is a heartfelt one. She moved to the United States by herself at the age of 17, after spending most of her life in the countryside of Mexico.

“At the time, even the idea of coming to the U.S. felt impossible,” Martinez said. "Thanks to the support of my parents, my uncles and my aunt, I was able to pursue my dreams and begin my college education here.”

Throughout her time at UWG, she became a part of the Honors College and is president of two student organizations – the Management Club and the French Club. Her participation in these organizations has solidified her confidence in trying out new opportunities and adding onto her resume. Her involvement has also sharpened her English proficiency and strengthened her advocacy for others.

“By learning from my mentors, professors and professional development programs, I’ve sharpened both my academic and professional skills,” Martinez stated. “Hearing inspiring stories from others encouraged me to share my own journey and to continue supporting my community through leadership roles.”

The Honors College has provided Martinez with life-changing experiences, which included study abroad programs. Martinez studied in several countries including Japan, Ireland and London. These programs inspired an interest in global affairs and international economics, which are fields that she is currently studying. During her time in both Ireland and London, she conducted research on the tourism industry and economic impact for both countries — teaching her more about business affairs and market analysis.

“It was fascinating to explore how culture influences marketing, consumer behavior and business strategies, which are insights that are crucial for stakeholders invested in economic growth and innovation,” Martinez stated.

Beyond her research, Martinez truly enjoyed her study abroad experiences and was able to identify a part of herself that she never knew would come true: independence.

“Studying abroad has taught me valuable skills on how to make effective decisions, adapt to unfamiliar environments, handle culture shock and even feel comfortable when dealing with uncomfortable settings,” she shared.

Martinez also achieved another accomplishment by receiving the Gilman Scholarship, a program that offers merit-based scholarships to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need or want to study abroad.

“Receiving the Gilman Scholarship opened the door for me to study abroad [this time in Asia],” she explained. “I feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity – one that I will continue to advocate for in the years to come.”

Dr. Karen Owen, dean of University College and Honors College, noted how extraordinary and talented Martinez has been throughout her academic career.

“Her commitment to experiential learning and eagerness to take on new challenges make her an incredible example of academic excellence and global citizenship,” Owen stated.

Following her graduation, Martinez plans to move to California with her younger brother and work in the accounting field. She is also in the process of applying to master’s programs in international trade law and economics and global business development at two universities. The end goal is to earn a CPA certification and work as an economic consultant in international affairs.

“I’m excited to return to the state where I was born and start a new chapter in my life,” Martinez said.
