The University of West Georgia is dedicated to help students grow connections and solidify their experience beyond the classroom. One of these notable examples includes the School of Communication, Film and Media’s (SCFM) Media Day. This eventful day serves as one of the most important days for SCFM students, as they are given the opportunity to meet with media professionals and learn more about the fields that interest them.

Sponsored by Georgia Power, Media Day – which celebrated its 44th annual event this year – is a full-scale professional experience packed with tools and resources designed to help students build connections, showcase job interest and receive candid feedback on their professionalism. From public relations to digital media, the program made sure that every student, regardless of their concentration, walks away with something valuable.

Keynote speaker Sonji Jacobs, co-owner and managing partner of strategic communication agency INCISIVE, tackled one of the most pressing concerns that graduates currently face: the challenging job market. Rather than offering empty reassurance, Jacobs delivered an empowering message on today’s generation of students being more resourceful and self-driven, with many carving their own paths through entrepreneurship and freelancing ventures.

Following Jacobs’ speech, table talks were in full-gear, giving students the floor to engage with media professionals on topics ranging from career growth to industry trends. Aliyah Barton, senior mass communications major with a concentration in public relations, noted that the table talks were the highlight of her day.

“I have a general understanding of how the process is postgraduation with job hunting and networking,” said Barton, who left Media Day feeling more confident that her knowledge was enough to get her foot in the door.
