In the late 1960s, Greek organizations did not thrive on campus as they do today. In fact, no official fraternities or sororities existed at the University of West Georgia - then called West Georgia College - until 1968. When the administration turned down student requests to form official chapters, ambitious young people took matters into their own hands. They formed 12 unofficial chapters from the ground up, creating their own charters and bylaws and even developing original names, crests and insignia.

Four UWG students, alumni serving at state Capitol
Two current University of West Georgia students, as well as two recent alumni, are serving as interns in the state government during the 2018 session of the Georgia General Assembly. Bailey Bryant and Xavier Jennings are enrolled at UWG. Bryant, an undergraduate majoring in political science, works for Sens. Ellis Black (Valdosta) and Brandon Beech (Alpharetta) as an aide. Jennings, who's working to earn his master's degree in public administration after graduating from UWG last May, is a policy and legislative intern in Gov. Nathan Deal's office.

Hipsters, Hackers and Hustlers: West Georgia Hosts Regional Hackathon for Students
University of West Georgia's second annual Hackathon event, held in collaboration by the College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) and the College of Education (COE), hosted 38 students from area middle and high schools. Divided into groups of just a few students each, many without any coding or design experience, students faced a single, day-long challenge. UWG Alum Looks Forward to Year as Digital Nomad
Taylor Enfinger stood on a small metal platform and looked at the Nevis River more than 400 feet below her. Her feet tied to a bungee cord, she felt the New Zealand wind against her face. She stretched out her arms and heard the technician count backwards from three. "I was thinking to myself, 'This is exactly how my life has played out,'" Enfinger said, recalling the experience. "Find the highest cliff and jump. See where it takes you. You never know."

Nurse Legacy: Nursing student is keeping to the family tradition
Kyle Kenerly chose to find his path at the University of West Georgia for several reasons. As a big history fan, Kenerly planned to get a history degree and coach football. His research showed him that UWG had an excellent College of Education. He also hoped to play college football. And, his grandparents lived in Carrollton, so he was very familiar with the area. With all those factors in place, he thought his career path was set.

From Water Treatment to "Auto-Aquarium": UWG Hosts Middle and High School Science Fair
Chapel Hill Middle School students shined at this year's West Georgia Regional Science and Engineering Fair, earning both grand and reserve grand prizes. Hosted by the University of West Georgia, the 19th annual fair brought nearly 60 student presentations from 15 regional schools to compete. Judged by volunteers, the highest scoring projects compete at state finals before potentially competing internationally in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
