The University of West Georgia Wolves are making waves in their second year of NCAA Division I transition, starting the 2025 season with a flawless 5-0 record – the program’s first such start since 2018 and only the eighth in school history.

This remarkable run includes three road victories and positions UWG as the first transitioning football championship subdivision (FCS) program to begin 5-0 against FCS competition since North Dakota State achieved the feat in 2006.

“This kind of success is the result of the determination and talent of our student-athletes and coaches, and we are thrilled by the resilience they’ve shown on the field so far this season,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, UWG’s president. “At UWG, we’re dedicated to building champions for life, and this historic start is a powerful reflection of that commitment in action.”

The Wolves’ momentum comes at a pivotal time, as the program – led by second-year Head Coach Joel Taylor – continues to build its identity in the competitive landscape of Division I FCS. This Saturday, UWG travels to face No. 21 Austin Peay in a top-25 conference showdown, with the Wolves currently ranked No. 16 in the nation

“Our vision is to be the west Georgia region’s Division I program of choice, and this start is a testament to the hard work that’s gone into our elevation to the FCS level,” said Jason Carmichael, UWG’s director of athletics. “To be 5-0 at this stage – and to do it with grit in some tough road games – speaks volumes about our program’s trajectory.”

The Wolves return to University Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 11, to face nationally ranked Abilene Christian, followed by a road game at another ranked opponent, Tarleton State, and a highly anticipated Homecoming matchup against Central Arkansas on Oct. 25. Following a road contest at North Alabama, UWG will close out the regular season at home on Nov. 15 against Utah Tech.

With only three home games remaining this season, now is the time to rally behind the Wolves and experience the energy of Division I football in Carrollton.
