UWG Climbs 20 Spots in Latest U.S. News & World National University Rankings Share this page
The University of West Georgia continues to build national momentum, climbing 20 positions in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings while continuing its trajectory as Georgia’s fastest-growing public university.
In the 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, UWG rose to No. 353 among national universities, up 20 positions from No. 373 last year. The university also climbed 14 positions among the nation’s public universities, moving from No. 203 to No. 189.
The year-over-year gains place UWG among the fastest-rising nationally ranked public universities in the University System of Georgia.
“This momentum reflects the work happening across the University of West Georgia every day,” said UWG President Dr. Michael Johnson. “More students are choosing UWG, more students are succeeding here, and our national profile continues to rise. These rankings are not the goal in themselves, but they are another indicator that our commitment to student success, academic excellence and opportunity is producing results.”
UWG’s rise comes during a period of significant enrollment growth. As Georgia’s fastest-growing public university, UWG continues to attract increasing numbers of undergraduate and graduate students while strengthening its focus on retention, degree completion and career outcomes.
The university’s progress in the U.S. News rankings was evident across multiple measures. In addition to its 20-position rise among national universities and 14-position improvement among public universities, UWG continued to receive national recognition for its role in creating opportunities for students and advancing social mobility.
UWG ranked No. 75 nationally in social mobility, improving 12 positions from No. 87 the previous year. The U.S. News Social Mobility ranking measures how effectively universities enroll and graduate students who receive federal Pell Grants.
“Our responsibility is not simply to enroll students; it is to ensure they succeed,” Johnson said. “Growth matters when it creates greater opportunity, when students persist and graduate, and when the education they receive changes the trajectory of their lives, their families and their communities.”
The latest rankings add to a period of growth and transformation at UWG as the university expands its research enterprise, strengthens partnerships with industry and communities, and continues investments designed to improve student success and the student experience.
The U.S. News & World Report National Universities rankings include more than 400 public and private universities nationwide and represent one of many tools students and their families can use when determining which university best meets their needs.
