Melissa Johnston, Ph.D.

Melissa P. Johnston is a Professor at the University of West Georgia. She teaches graduate courses in the school library media program. Johnston worked as a school librarian for 13 years in Georgia before obtaining her PhD at Florida State University. Johnston’s research and publications focus on the school librarian as a leader, the school librarian's role in technology integration, and school librarianship on a global level. Johnston is the author of numerous articles in journals such as School Library Research, School Libraries Worldwide, and School Library Connection. She is a Co-PI for the REALISD Project, an IMLS funded grant, to provide professional development for school librarians to support STEM education efforts in their schools. Additionally, she is a Co-PI on the IMLS funded Online Ready research project to determine what gaps exist in the design and delivery of culturally competent online K-12 instruction by school librarians, and to use that knowledge to create professional development that will specifically address those gaps. Johnston is currently a co-editor of School Libraries Worldwide, the official research journal for the International Association of School Librarianship.
