Matthew Watts

Matt Watts is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Miami. His research currently focuses on memory, mind, and artificial intelligence, though his philosophical interests range widely, extending from existentialism and phenomenology to social and political philosophy.

He is spearheading an XR (Extended Reality) initiative that incorporates Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) into the classroom. This work explores questions surrounding immersive experience and extended reality, and investigates how immersive virtual reality "pumps" (intuition pumps, empathy pumps, and the like) can help students connect with, and ultimately better understand, difficult philosophical ideas and topics. For this work he recently earned the honorable mention for the Oxford University Press Teaching With Technology Award.
