Military Tuition Assistance

The Tuition Assistance (TA) program provides financial assistance for voluntary off-duty educational programs in support of a service member's professional and personal self-development goals. All Active Duty Service Members (officers, warrant officers, enlisted) are authorized to participate in the TA program through their respective branches. This includes members of the Active Guard Reserve, as well as Reserve Component Service Members who are activated under U.S. Code Title 10 or Title 32.

TA is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. TA is funded by the individual services. Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process' and restrictions.

Mandatory Fee Exemption for Students Using Military Tuition Assistance

University of West Georgia President Kyle Marrero decided to exempt students from Mandatory Fees in a decision announced on May 27, 2016. The policy would take effect starting with the Fall 2016 term could save service members as much as $981 for full-time enrollment. Please note that fee exemption applies only to courses paid for by Tuition Assistance.

What Are Mandatory Fees?

Mandatory fees are necessary to provide a complete range of student services that support the academic environment and provide the best possible services to the widest possible range of students at a reasonable cost. University fees enhance the experience of our students and the quality of the UWG community. The itemized list of Mandatory Fees and their explanations is available on the Bursar's website.

Process for Students Using Military Tuition Assistance

  1. Students using military Tuition Assistance must submit their original Tuition Assistance form and a current military ID to personnel in the Center for Adult Learners and Veterans (UCC 311). Online students or those not within driving distance of the UWG Carrollton campus should contact the CALV at 678-839-5210 or cav@westga.edu for special assistance.
  2. Once CALV personnel verify the authenticity of the Tuition Assistance form and the service member's ID, our staff will code the service member in the student information system as meeting the criteria for the exemption of Mandatory Fees for the appropriate term.
  3. CALV personnel will forward the service member's Tuition Assistance form to the Bursar's Office for payment processing.

Combination of Education Benefits

Please note that it is not possible to use both military Tuition Assistance and GI Bill benefits for the same enrolled courses.
