SLPA-6711 Culturally Responsive Practices in Communication Sciences and Disorders
Description
This course examines culturally responsive practices in communication sciences and disorders with an emphasis on person- and family-centered care. Students will explore how cultural, linguistic, and individual factors shape client and family values, preferences, and goals in clinical service delivery. Course topics include cultural humility, systemic influences such as health disparities and social determinants of health, and evidence-based approaches when working with bilingual and multilingual populations. Students will analyze their own cultural perspectives and biases, evaluate professional and ethical responsibilities, and apply strategies that promote equitable access, continuity of care, and family involvement. Contemporary professional issues including workforce representation, recruitment, and retention of underrepresented populations, and academic concerns related to student success will be integrated to prepare students for ethical and responsive practice in diverse global and cross-cultural contexts.
