Frequently Asked Questions
A fraternity or sorority at the University of West Georgia (UWG) is a values-based student organization that fosters leadership, scholarship, service, and lifelong friendships. These organizations provide opportunities for members to grow personally and professionally, while contributing positively to the UWG community. All social fraternities and sororities at UWG are affiliated with national/international governing bodies, connecting students with a global network of undergraduate members and alumni.
Joining a fraternity or sorority at UWG offers students a supportive community that feels like a home away from home. Members build lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills, and gain access to academic support and mentorship opportunities. Involvement also opens doors to service projects, campus events, and professional networking that extend far beyond graduation. These experiences help students grow as individuals while preparing them for success in their future careers.
The financial obligation of a fraternity/sorority typically includes a one-time application fee/recruitment registration fee and membership dues, which can vary depending on the organization and chapter. Membership dues typically cover chapter activities and events, fees to the national organization, and support for chapter operations. Additional expenses may include housing fees, social events, and apparel. Many of our organizations offer payment plans and scholarships.
Average Cost:
- New Member Fees: $150-$1500
- Chapter Dues: $100 -$800
Fraternity/sorority members typically have higher GPAs and graduation rates compared to non-members, as they benefit from academic support programs, study groups, and leadership opportunities within the Greek community.
All fraternity/sorority life members are required to maintain a term GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Hazing is not condoned or accepted within fraternity/sorority life at UWG, and organizations have strict anti-hazing policies enforced by university regulations and national/international headquarters. Our office requires every fraternity and sorority's new member to complete anti-hazing education within 30 days post initiation. If you are concerned about hazing, please contact the Office of Community Standards.
