The Ripple Effect: UWG Names Classroom for Two Alumni Who Transformed Education Share this page
The University of West Georgia has long been shaped by bold thinkers, servant leaders and champions of education. Among them, Tom ’61 and Patsy ’75 Upchurch stand out as proud alumni and advocates for students across Georgia. In recognition of their legacy, UWG has named a classroom in the College of Education to honor the lasting tribute of two educators whose lives have been defined by service.

For Tom Upchurch, the journey began with a calling to serve. Over the course of nearly two decades with Carrollton City Schools, first as principal of Carrollton High School and then as superintendent, he reshaped the educational landscape through pioneering work in early childhood education, technological advancement and equity for at-risk students.
“From the moment I stepped into that first classroom, I knew education was where I could make the greatest impact,” said Tom. “Whether it was advocating for early learning, embracing new technology or standing up for students who needed a champion, I saw every decision as a chance to give children a better future.”
That belief guided decisions that placed Carrollton City Schools at the forefront of innovation. Under Upchurch’s leadership, the district launched Georgia’s first public Pre-K program, became a national leader in educational technology and consolidated its schools onto a 130-acre campus.
Beyond Carrollton, Upchurch’s influence shaped state policy as a member of the Georgia State Board of Education and later as executive director of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education. His advocacy reached the highest levels of government and business, promoting initiatives that closed achievement gaps and emphasized the vital connection between public education and economic development.
“Everything I accomplished in my career came from a belief that education has the power to break barriers and lift entire communities,” said Tom.

Together, Tom and Patsy have never stopped giving back. Their support of UWG’s College of Education and Early Learning Center is especially meaningful, as one of their former Carrollton students, Dr. Laura Smith, now leads in the very college, they champion. For the Upchurches, it’s a powerful reflection of how great teaching shapes generations.
“Educators rarely get to see the full scope of their impact,” Tom said. “But when you invest in a child, in a classroom, you’re investing in generations.”
“Tom and Patsy Upchurch embody passion, vision, and commitment to the transformative power of education,” said Allyson Bretch ’14, UWG’s vice president for university advancement and CEO of the university’s philanthropic foundations. “Their legacy reminds us that educators change lives. We’re proud to honor them in a way that will continue inspiring future generations of students and teachers right here at UWG.”
