In a remarkable demonstration of resilience and shared ambition, two graduate students – husband and wife – crossed the University of West Georgia’s Commencement stage together last month. Their simultaneous graduation, amidst raising their young son, not only showcases individual scholarly milestones but also underscores the strength of navigating success together, overcoming obstacles and going the distance.

Paul Onyekwuluje and Toluwalase Shitu

Paul Onyekwuluje and Toluwalase Shitu’s journey, shaped by long hours of focused study, consistent encouragement, and a shared dedication to growth both in and out of the classroom, stands as a meaningful testament to the endurance and unity that thrive in a strong partnership. Both earning master’s degrees from the Richards College of Business, their accomplishments mark a meaningful occasion for themselves and for UWG.

“Graduating together is a major achievement for us,” said Onyekwuluje. “It reflects the power of teamwork, commitment and perseverance – proof that our shared efforts truly paid off.”

For Onyekwuluje, this achievement marks a historic moment as he is the first graduate of UWG’s new Master of Science in Strategic Cybersecurity and Information Management program, which he pursued after completing his MBA in July 2024, making him a double Wolf. This decision to continue his academic pursuits was inspired by an increasing interest in information security developed during his career as a financial auditor. With each module of the program including hands-on labs and projects ensuring students are well-prepared for challenges in the cybersecurity world, Onyekwuluje felt this holistic structure set the program apart.

“I realized how critical cybersecurity is to the integrity of financial systems and broader business operations,” said Onyekwuluje. “The program offered a distinctive blend of theoretical foundations and real-world application with core areas such as cryptography, advanced networking, cloud computing, digital forensics, cybercrime, IoT security, and both defensive and offensive security strategies.”

Shitu, who earned her master’s degree in applied business analytics and recently accepted a position as a financial analyst at Cummins Inc., acknowledged that the program, combined with her prior accounting experience, prepared her well for the role. With her background in accounting and a passion for data-driven work, she noted the most valuable part was acquiring new, in-demand skills that expanded her understanding of data analysis and enhanced her ability to interpret and apply data effectively.

“The program included hands-on learning through projects, assignments and collaborative group work, allowing us to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios,” said Shitu. “The knowledge and practical experience gained from the program have equipped me with the tools to excel.”

Despite the demands of their success – both serving as graduate assistants, working 20 hours per week, attending classes and caring for their young son – they credit their Nigerian heritage and shared principles as the foundation for their resilience.

“Our humble upbringing instilled in us the values of hard work, discipline, faith and the importance of completing what we start,” explained Shitu. “Our journey reflects the strength of our heritage: a culture that values education, resilience and community.”

First meeting in 2012 during a CPA preparatory program, the two have since supported one another through professional certifications and now, graduate degrees. Now planning to celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family as they prepare to relocate to Indiana for new career opportunities, the couple expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Richards College of Business community for support, mentorship and cultivating an environment where growth, collaboration and innovation thrive.

Keeping in mind that their success extends far beyond them, they are mindful of the legacy they are creating – for their son, their community and future UWG Wolves. Their journey, defined by partnership, purpose and perseverance, leaves an indelible mark on the UWG community – proof that success is not just about individual accomplishment, but about the power found in partnership.

“We hope our journey shows our child the power of trusting God, believing in oneself and staying committed to a purpose, even when the path is difficult,” concluded Onyekwuluje. “But most of all, we hope it inspires him to pursue his dreams with faith, courage and the confidence that anything is possible with dedication and grace. Our experiences reflect that success is possible for anyone willing to put in the work, and we hope future students see our story as proof that their goals are within reach.”
