Elizabeth Pope, Ph.D.

Elizabeth M. Pope, PhD, MA, is the Director of Research Compliance and an Associate Professor in the Educational Research program. Dr. Pope holds a BA and MA in religion with a specialization in Islam, a PhD in adult education, and the Interdisciplinary Qualitative Studies certificate from the University of Georgia. 

As the Director of Research Compliance, Dr. Pope oversees UWG’s research compliance activities for regulatory compliance, training, and human
research protection, including the Institutional Review Board (IRB). She ensures human research compliance with all institute, USG, state, federal, and other funding agency requirements. She coordinates and conducts appropriate human research compliance-related education and training for UWG students, faculty, and staff to ensure current policies and procedures are followed. Dr. Pope coordinates the development and enforcement of human research compliance-related policies, monitoring compliance for the university’s domestic and international research activities.

Dr. Pope is actively engaged in teaching, research, and service. Her research interests lie in adult learning in interfaith encounters, transformative learning theory (particularly in interfaith and intercultural contexts), and teaching and learning research methods. As a qualitative methodologist, her scholarship focuses on reflexivity as a foundational and continuous component of qualitative research, the use of digital tools in qualitative research, ethics in qualitative research, and conducting qualitative meta-syntheses. Dr. Pope is also a certified professional trainer in ATLAS.ti, qualitative data analysis software (QDAS).

Dr. Pope teaches fully online doctoral, specialist, and masters level courses in research methods (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods) for educational research and doctoral dissertation and design. She directs and serves on doctoral dissertation committees for the Ed.D. programs in School Improvement and Professional Counseling.
