The Student Technology Fee (Tech Fee) proposal and award process is conducted in three phases: the proposal submission, granting of awards, and post-award spending and reports. Details of these phases are outlined below. If you have questions regarding the Tech Fee proposal process, contact us at TechFeesInfo-list@westga.edu.

Phase I: Proposal Submission

All proposals must be submitted online via the web-based tool. All proposals should be completed in their entirety; incomplete proposals may prohibit the committee from making accurate award decisions. Some proposed initiatives may require collaboration with Facilities, Information Technology Services, and/or Purchasing staff to ensure that proposals are in compliance with the university's facilities, technology, and purchasing guidelines. Any recommendations, standards, and costs for services should be used in the development of your proposal and its budget. For assistance in determining Facilities and IT-related costs and/or purchasing requirements, contact us at TechFeesInfo-list@westga.edu.

Step 1. Complete the entire proposal form using the web-based Tech Fee Proposal Form by the deadline.

Phase II: Granting Awards

During the award-granting phase, colleges and administrative units evaluate all of their proposals and their accompanying rankings. This effort is led by the College/Unit Representative. Approved and ranked proposals are submitted to the Tech Fee Committee, which views all award recommendations and makes a final recommendation to University Leadership on behalf of all colleges and administrative offices.

For a list of College/Unit Representatives, visit the Tech Fee Contacts section at the bottom of this page.

Step 2. College and Unit Leadership and Coordinators evaluate all proposals for their given area and provide recommendations and ranking to the Tech Fee Committee.

Step 3. College/Unit Representatives work with the Tech Fee Committee (comprised of all College/Unit representatives, a Faculty Senate representative, a Staff Advisory Council representative, a Student Affairs representative, and SGA student representatives) to review and make funding recommendations for submitted proposals to University Leadership.

Step 4. University Leadership reviews all recommendations and provides final approval to the Tech Fee Committee.

Step 5. All Tech Fee proposal submitters are contacted and notified of full fund approval, partial fund approval, or non-approval.

Phase III: Post Award

Step 6. Submitters notified of fully and partially funded proposals must:

  • Review all feedback related to their project for any specific requirements.
  • Follow all spending guidelines.
  • Complete acquisition and implementation of all hardware/software/other prior to the spending deadline.

Award letters are sent in late spring; however, budgets are not available for spending until the start of the fiscal year, July 1.

Step 7. Project status reports are a requirement of the post-award stage. Status reports allow university executives, as well as auditors, governing associations, and other university constituents the opportunity to see what progress was made with technology fees.

About Tech Fee

The University of West Georgia implemented a Student Technology Fee in the fall of 2000. This fee was approved for all University System of Georgia institutions, including UWG. The Student Technology Fee for enrolled UWG students is a mandatory fee for fall, spring, and summer semesters. To ensure adequate student input on initiatives selected for funding, all voting committees (colleges and administrative units) are comprised of fifty percent student participants identified by the Student Government Association (SGA).

Purpose

Technology fee revenues are used for the direct benefit of students to assist in meeting the educational objectives of their academic programs. Also, fee revenues can be used for hardware and network-related expenditures that include support of general-purpose or special-purpose laboratories used by students. Thus, the Student Technology Fee is a positive way to improve technology accessibility for the benefit of UWG students.
