Ashley Sutton

Ashley Sutton is an accomplished special education professional who has dedicated her career to supporting students with diverse learning needs. She holds a Master's degree in Special Education from Georgia Southern University and a Bachelor's degree in Special Education from the University of West Georgia, along with extensive certifications, including Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) and multiple special education endorsements. Currently serving as a Lecturer, Undergraduate Program Coordinator, and Assistant Chair in the Department of Special Education at the University of West Georgia, Ashley brings eight years of high school teaching experience from Carrollton High School, where she specialized in adapted curriculum instruction, community-based learning, and vocational skills development for 9th-12th grade students. Her commitment to excellence in education has been recognized through numerous awards, including the 2024 Leading the Pack Award, the 2019 Carrollton City Schools Teacher of the Year, and multiple Golden Apple Awards spanning seven consecutive years. Beyond her teaching and administrative roles, Ashley actively contributes to the special education community through professional presentations at IDEAS Conferences, service as Co-Director of Camp Discovery, and involvement in various community organizations supporting individuals with disabilities.

Teacher Preparation

Ashley Sutton has established herself as a dedicated leader in special education teacher preparation at the University of West Georgia. As the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for the Department of Special Education, she oversees the development of future special educators through a comprehensive curriculum that includes foundational courses in special education, inclusive classroom practices, ethics and policies, and hands-on field experiences. Her teaching portfolio spans critical areas from introductory special education concepts to advanced collaboration strategies, with particular expertise in differentiating instruction and preparing teachers for diverse classroom settings. 

Transition for Students with Disabilities

Ashley Sutton brings extensive expertise in adapted curriculum and transition services for high school students with disabilities, developed through eight years of dedicated teaching experience at Carrollton High School. As a Special Education Adapted Curriculum teacher for 9th-12th grade students, she specialized in designing and implementing comprehensive educational programs that addressed academic, vocational, daily living, and social-emotional skills essential for post-secondary success. Her role as a Community-Based Instruction teacher demonstrates her commitment to real-world learning experiences that prepare students for independent living and meaningful employment opportunities.
